Exuma's Best Beaches

Although many islands throughout the Caribbean have a number of beaches to enjoy, there are few that are as spectacular as those found in Exuma. Unspoiled is an understatement. The beaches in the Exumas appear as if no one has ever set foot on them. It is rare to see tourists even on the most well known beaches of Great Exuma, the largest and most populated island in the chain. Understandably, high profile travelers and celebrities alike are drawn to the Exumas for this very reason.

"Exuma is hiding in plain sight.”

These three beaches, all accessible by car, rival the beauty and privacy of the most photographed beaches in the world.

1. Coco Plum Beach

Located at the northern end of Great Exuma, Coco Plum beach would impress even the toughest beach critic. An unmarked dirt road, right off the highway, winds through the island bush to an abandoned shack resting under a large casuarina tree. It is there that one will find knee deep crystal clear water for as far as the eye can see. Sandbars, sand dollars, and no one for days. The occasional sea turtle can be spotted as it stops by to snack on the sea grass patches in the area. Pack a lunch and spend the day on your own beach, with commanding panoramic views of small cays dotting the horizon. You’ll never want to leave.

2. Tropic of Cancer Beach

Undoubtedly the most famous beach in the Exumas, Tropic of Cancer beach has all the elements travelers spend a lifetime searching for; pristine white sand, electric blue water, and blissful solitude. Given its namesake, the beach is located at 23 degrees latitude and is marked with a blue line identifying the exact location of the Tropic of Cancer. While driving through Little Exuma, a roadside sign indicates the turn to the beach. The bumpy road leads you through a neighborhood and to an unassuming shack that serves as the entrance to a sight you won’t soon forget.

3. Forbes Hill Beach

Just after crossing the bridge to Little Exuma into Forbes Hill, a faded sign on the highway marks a beach access that provides a two-for-one opportunity. The short dirt road drive leads to an opening that will take your breath away. To the left, is an area protected by a limestone outcropping with calm turquoise water that merely folds onto the sand. The crescent shoreline welcomes a stroll along the beach. A small walking path to the right of the parking area opens to a picturesque beach exposed to the waves of the ocean, which allows for amazing views to the north, east, and south. Every shade of blue spans the 180-degree views. Also known as “sea glass beach”, the lucky traveler might literally take home a piece of paradise.

Choosing a favorite beach is difficult in the Exumas, but each has its own charm. The privacy and tranquility experienced in the most beautiful corner of the Bahamas is what dreams are made of. Easily accessible by commercial or private air, Exuma is an undiscovered gem that is hiding in plain sight.
